JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. — Two Ukrainian mothers who fled the war in their home country have opened a new beauty salon in Johnson City, marking a milestone in their journey to rebuild their lives in the United States.

The salon, Why So Beauty, held its grand opening and ribbon cutting Friday afternoon. Guests celebrated with Ukrainian food, champagne, and a raffle offering gift certificates for hair and nail services.

Founders Viktoriia and Karina arrived in the U.S. in 2022 and spent two years overcoming financial, paperwork, and language challenges to obtain the licenses needed to open the salon. With support from the American Civic Association, they achieved their dream of starting a business they once hoped to open in Ukraine.

Translator Yuliia Nevmerzhytska said the women’s perseverance reflects the struggles and resilience of refugee families.
> “Fleeing the war has been challenging, especially for young mothers with children. They have been a powerful testament to what you can do together,” Nevmerzhytska said.

The salon aims to bring European beauty styles to Greater Binghamton while offering a welcoming space for the community. Viktoriia and Karina said Johnson City residents have embraced them, making the transition easier despite ongoing language barriers.

Community members praised the opening as both a cultural addition and an example of immigrant entrepreneurship. The founders said they look forward to growing their business and sharing their heritage through beauty and style.

Why So Beauty is now open to the public, with more information available on Facebook and Instagram.
