A 43-year-old incarcerated man died after deputies found him unresponsive during a routine cell check at the Cayuga County Jail, authorities said.
Andre Denman was discovered just before 4 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. Jail staff began providing medical care and requested an ambulance to the public safety building. Denman was taken to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts.
Under state law, the New York State Attorney General’s Office has opened an independent investigation into the death. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a forensic examination and autopsy, with toxicology results pending. The sheriff’s office denied social media claims that Denman was beaten, stating he was alone in his cell when found. Sheriff Brian Schenck said no additional details would be released pending the investigation.
