WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney is leading a group of New York Republicans in urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to enroll the state in a new federal tax credit program designed to expand access to education scholarships.
In a letter sent to the governor, Tenney and five other House Republicans called on the state to opt into a program created under H.R. 1. The initiative allows individuals to receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations made to eligible scholarship-granting organizations.
“By opting in to this program, Governor Hochul can ensure that New York families are not locked out of an opportunity to expand educational options,” Tenney said in a statement.
To qualify, participating nonprofit organizations must award scholarships to at least 10 elementary or secondary students and direct at least 90% of donated funds toward those scholarships. The program is restricted to low- and middle-income families.
Supporters of the measure emphasized that the program relies on private donations and does not divert state funding from public schools. Tenney noted the funds could also be used to help public school students purchase necessary supplies.
New York is currently among the states that have not yet joined the program. According to the lawmakers, 28 governors have already opted in or announced plans to do so. Residents and organizations in New York cannot participate in the tax credit program unless the governor formally signs on.
The letter was also signed by Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, Elise Stefanik, Nick LaLota, Michael Lawler, and Nick Langworthy.
Hochul’s office has not yet announced whether New York will join the program.
