BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, a fixture of Southern Tier politics for more than 20 years, announced she will not seek reelection in 2026.
Lupardo, a Democrat, has represented the 123rd District since 2005. Her district encompasses the city of Binghamton and the towns of Vestal and Union.
“Serving in the Assembly has been an incredible honor,” Lupardo said in a statement, adding that while the decision was difficult, she feels it is time for a “new chapter.”
A Staten Island native, Lupardo moved to the region in the 1970s for graduate school and never left. Before her election to the state Legislature, she served on the Broome County Legislature from 1999 to 2000.
During her tenure in Albany, Lupardo rose to become a influential voice for the state’s farming community as chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, a position she has held since 2019. She previously chaired the committees on Aging and Children and Families.
Lupardo said she intends to remain in the Southern Tier and stay active in local causes after her term ends.
“The Southern Tier is a wonderful place,” Lupardo said. “I look forward to joining with others in a new capacity to continue working to make the community even better.”
Candidates interested in the 123rd District seat are expected to begin filing for the vacancy later this spring.
