Binghamton University to rehire most laid-off Sodexo workers

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Binghamton University officials confirmed that most Sodexo workers laid off in May will be rehired by the university’s new food service provider, Chartwells Higher Education, when campus dining halls reopen in August.

The university said the layoffs are part of a routine seasonal process, as dining halls typically close each May and reopen in August. This year’s layoffs coincide with the transition from Sodexo, which had served the university for more than 40 years, to Chartwells, effective June 1.

Approximately 689 workers affected by the layoffs are expected to return under Chartwells’ employment when the fall semester begins.

University officials also noted that some features of the current meal plan structure are likely to remain in place for at least the first year under the new vendor to ensure continuity for students.

Binghamton University emphasized that the layoffs are not permanent and that rehiring is part of the usual seasonal cycle.
