ITHACA, N.Y. — A new mural celebrating the city’s immigrant and refugee populations is being proposed for West State Street, though the project still awaits final approval from Tompkins County legislators.
The mural, slated for a wall near the Southern Tier AIDS Program and the Tompkins County Human Services Building, would be managed by the nonprofit Ithaca Welcomes Refugees. Funding for the initiative is provided by the Community Arts Partnership and the Tompkins County Tourism Board.
Designed by local artist Hugo Medina, the artwork will depict residents welcoming refugees to the community. The design also features monarch butterflies, intended to symbolize the beauty of life and the nature of migration.
