ITHACA, N.Y. — A former Cornell University student was convicted of rape charges in connection with an attack that took place on the school’s campus in the early weeks of the 2024 school year.
Cornell police initially arrested Bilguun Enkhbayar, a 20-year-old Cornell student at the time, in September 2024. He was charged with first-degree rape and second-degree burglary after being indicted by a grand jury for an incident that occurred on Sept. 1, 2024.
Enkhbayar, now 22, was convicted of those charges by a jury on Nov. 24, 2025, according to District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, after a week-long trial.
Van Houten said the indictment stated Enkhbayar “knowingly and unlawfully [entered] a dorm room with the intent to commit a crime therein and [engaged] in vaginal sexual contact with another person who was incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless.”
Enkhbayar is facing up to 25 years in prison for the rape conviction.
Van Houten praised the “zealous advocacy, professionalism and diligence” of Assistant District Attorney Emily Perks Quinlan, the prosecutor of the case, along with fellow Assistant District Attorney Carmen Lopez.
Defense attorney Jeffrey Chabrowe, based in Manhattan, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Enkhbayar will be sentenced on Feb. 24, 2026, by Judge Scott Miller.
